3D Damaged Goods was commissioned for the exhibition to expose, to show, to demonstrate, to inform, to offer, an exhibition that questioned traditional forms of exhibition-making in the 1990’s by focusing on modes of display and conditions of reception. Judith Barry’s artistic contribution to Damaged Goods at the New Museum, 1986 was to design the exhibition in collaboration with the artists. When recreating the original Damaged Goods exhibition proved unfeasible at MUMOK, 3D Damaged Goods provided an opportunity to interrogate the miniature in relation to tromp l’oeil by appropriating contemporary photographic and 3D printing processes in sculpture. Hence, her essay, Dissenting Spaces from the New Museum’s Damaged Goods catalog, figures prominently in this work.
